Hot Wheels Velocity X for the Nintendo GameCube attempts to translate the classic Hot Wheels toy cars into a fast-paced, action-packed racing game with an open-world-like structure. In my opinion, the game doesn't fully succeed in this. The races and stunts certainly provide some enjoyment, especially with the numerous boost options and weapons you can use while racing. These elements create a fun dynamic, but unfortunately, the experience is dampened by the controls that sometimes feel too floaty. This makes precision a challenge, which can be quite frustrating.
The AI of the opponents also leaves much to be desired; sometimes they are too easy to beat, while at other times they are inexplicably strong. Graphically, the game looks colourful, I must admit, but the environments lack detail and variation, making the visual aspect less appealing. The soundtrack is tailored to the high speed of the races, but it doesn't really stick in your head after playing. This is a shame, as a good soundtrack can elevate the gaming experience.
For young Hot Wheels fans, Hot Wheels Velocity X can still be an entertaining experience thanks to the recognisable cars and the racing fun they offer. However, for players looking for more depth and polish, the game falls short. It's clear that more attention could have been given to refining the controls and adding variation to the environments to keep the game genuinely enjoyable in the long run.
